While I recognize Gates was a vast improvement over the incompetence, corruption, and malfeasance of Rumsfeld, so what? Any common fool would have been an improvement over Rumsfeld, and the bottom line on both men is identical. Gates is complicit in the unlawful detentions at Guantanamo Bay, the torture, the illegal kangaroo courts, the idiocy in Afghanistan, and above all, the RAPE of Iraq. He's a war criminal and a disgrace to his office. Neither do I agree that he's performed especially well. DoD is a bloated mess riddled with incompetence and corruption even now, and Iraq and Afghanistan are both just a bad joke in military terms -- if we ever had to fight a real war with these people in charge, we'd lose. Of all the areas where we need a clean break from the delusional thinking, criminality, and shameless corruption of the Bush administration, DoD is second only to the festering disaster at DOJ. Some things cannot be excused, and Robert Gates is just as unfit for his high office as AG Mukasey is. -- Charles Gittings * * * PROJECT TO ENFORCE THE GENEVA CONVENTIONS (PEGC) http://www.pegc.us PEGC Blog http://pegc.blogspot.com/ Charles B.
